Keval Mehta, 40, of Spring Hill, was fatally shot outside a Weeki Wachee residence shortly after 3 a.m. on August 20, 2025. Deputies responded to Schering Street and found Mehta with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say Mehta had given a former coworker, 23-year-old Evan Michael Stanley, a ride home after they ran into each other at a bar. An argument reportedly erupted at the house over a dog Stanley had taken in when the two previously worked together. Stanley told deputies Mehta asked to see the dog, that he refused, and that Mehta made verbal threats. Stanley said he retrieved a rifle and loaded magazine from a safe and opened fire after believing Mehta was reaching into his trunk for a weapon. Detectives reported no firearm belonging to Mehta was found in the vehicle and say Stanley gave conflicting statements about the sequence of events.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office arrested Stanley at the scene and charged him with second-degree murder with a firearm; he was booked and held without bond as the investigation continued. Family notices and memorial pages have recorded Mehta’s death and Spring Hill ties.

Did anyone in the area see Mehta or the two men that night who hasn’t spoken to investigators?
