Brandy Smith, 45, a mother from Middleburg, Florida, was shot to death in her home in the early minutes of August 4, 2025. Deputies with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office found Smith and her partner, 44-year-old David Lee, in their bedroom with multiple gunshot wounds after a 911 call placed from a nearby church just after midnight in which a teenager said he had killed his parents. Several spent shell casings and the firearm believed to have been used were recovered at the scene.

Sheriff Michelle Cook reported the suspected shooter was the couple’s 14-year-old son, identified by authorities as Trevor Lee, who was taken into custody after walking to the church and calling 911. Family members expressed shock and the boy’s sister asked that he not be portrayed as a monster while investigators continued examining what led to the shooting. The teenager was arrested the morning of August 4 and later indicted on two counts of first-degree murder; court records show a not-guilty plea was entered through counsel as pretrial proceedings began.
