Debbie Evans, 65, was fatally shot on her front porch in Okeechobee, Florida, on Sunday, July 27, 2025. Family notices list her full name as Debora Kay Long Evans, born October 13, 1959. She and her husband, Purvin Evans, were both killed while spending time at their home in the Brindaban Forest subdivision; relatives said the couple had been taking a break from remodeling work at a second home when the attacker approached and opened fire.
Multiple 911 callers reported gunfire and a man dressed in black moving through the neighborhood with a rifle. Deputies arrived around 1:35 p.m. and found the two victims on the front porch. The shooter ignored commands, fired at law enforcement, and was shot by returning fire; he was taken to HCA Lawnwood Medical Center in Fort Pierce and pronounced dead. The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as 51-year-old neighbor Paul Scott Wier and said motive remained under investigation. No arrests were made because the suspect died following the shootout.
The community memorialized Debbie and Purvin Evans in obituaries and victim registries, noting their long ties to Okeechobee and family life. If anyone knew the Evanses or has information about the events that afternoon, please come forward.
