Purvin L. Evans, 64, a husband and longtime Okeechobee resident, was shot and killed on July 27, 2025, in the Brindaban Forest subdivision of Okeechobee, Florida. His wife, Debora Kay Long Evans, was also killed that day; obituary notices and funeral information list the couple together and describe them as longtime members of the community.

Local reports and investigators described a sudden eruption of violence that afternoon: a gunman dressed in black allegedly opened fire on two neighbors before engaging responding deputies. An exchange of gunfire ended with the suspected shooter fatally shot by law enforcement. Five officers—four from the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office and one from the Okeechobee Police Department—were involved and placed on administrative leave while state authorities reviewed the incident. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement took the lead on the shooting review and the sheriff’s office handled the homicide investigation. Officials said there was no continuing threat to the broader community and no arrests were made because the sole identified suspect died in the shootout.

Investigators had not publicly released a motive as of the latest reports. Did anyone in Brindaban Forest or Okeechobee know the Evanses well enough to shed light on why they might have been targeted?
