DreShawn Mathis, 19, a Black male from Belleville, Illinois, was shot on the evening of Saturday, August 30, 2025. Officers were dispatched about 7:20 p.m.; investigators later determined the shooting occurred in the 500 block of North 38th Street. Mathis arrived at Memorial Hospital in Belleville with a gunshot wound, was stabilized, and then transferred to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, where the St.

Louis Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed he was pronounced dead at 9:23 p.m. on August 30, 2025 from gunshot wounds sustained in the Belleville shooting. Detectives and the Crime Scene Unit processed the scene, and the incident was included in regional tracking of violent incidents. As of early September 2025 the Belleville police described the investigation as active and ongoing, asking for leads but not announcing any arrests or identifying suspects.
