Cody Chavous, 33, was fatally shot during an attempted carjacking at the 300 Riverside Apartments in Mableton on July 4. The shooting happened around 6 p.m. at the complex formerly called Concepts 21 Six Flags. Officers found Chavous with multiple gunshot wounds; he was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died. He was a father to three children.
Authorities say 23-year-old Damaree M. Baker allegedly entered Chavous’s vehicle armed with a pistol and demanded the car. When Chavous refused, Baker allegedly shot him four times. Warrants also accuse Baker of attempting to carjack other people at the same location the same evening; witnesses reportedly fought off one attempt and another man was shot in the face and required surgery. Baker was arrested nearly a week later and booked into the Cobb County Adult Detention Center on murder, multiple hijacking counts, aggravated assault with intent to murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and several armed robbery counts.
The 300 Riverside Apartments has been identified as a complex with a history of serious crimes. Does anyone who lived at or visited the complex that day have information about the incidents or the people involved?
