Marissa Ramirez-Tellez, 34, was shot to death the night of June 29, 2025, on the 700 block of Wildwood Road west of Wasco. Deputies found her with gunshot wounds around 9 p.m.; she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives say she was ambushed by four armed assailants. By the next day, 38-year-old Alberto Garcia Hernandez Duran Jr. had been identified as one of the suspects; hours later Duran was found shot on Interstate 5 and died while being taken to a hospital. The freeway shooting has been described in court records as possible retaliation linked to Ramirez-Tellez’s killing. The California Highway Patrol arrested 28-year-old Juan Humberto Loza in connection with Duran’s death after an hours-long search near Shafter.
In the days after the homicide, the Kern County Sheriff’s Office executed multiple search and arrest warrants that produced a cascade of arrests, weapons seizures and recovered stolen vehicles. On July 7 deputies arrested 43-year-old Aaron Olivas on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and took 56-year-old Cynthia Murillo into custody on suspicion of being an accessory; a Wasco residence search turned up about a dozen firearms. On July 8 and July 9 deputies arrested 28-year-old Argel Barragan and 24-year-old Angel Chavez on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.
