A Fourth of July shooting in Champaign left 32-year-old Martez L. Jones Jr. dead after he was hit by gunfire outside a business on the 1900 block of West Bradley Avenue. Police were called at 12:36 a.m. to reports of gunfire; Jones arrived at a nearby hospital by personal transport in critical condition, was taken into emergency surgery and was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana at 2:10 a.m. on July 4, 2025.

Early reports noted damage to several vehicles at the scene and that the shooter fled immediately after the shots. Investigators canvassed the area and sought surveillance footage and witnesses, and by July 17 a 37-year-old man from Urbana was taken into custody on a warrant alleging he fired multiple shots that struck Jones. Detectives said the investigation remained active and asked anyone with information or video to come forward.
