A domestic argument in Laurel, Maryland ended in a fatal shooting on the night of Saturday, September 20, 2025. Prince George’s County officers were called to a home in the 13400 block of Finsbury Court at about 10:45 p.m. and found 48-year-old James McGruder III with a gunshot wound. First responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

Investigators determined the incident arose from a domestic dispute. Detectives identified McGruder’s girlfriend, 33-year-old Latisha Smith of Laurel, as the suspect; the preliminary investigation says Smith allegedly shot McGruder during an argument. Smith was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder and related offenses and is being held at the Department of Corrections on no-bond status.
