An 18-year-old Black man named Marqwon Powers was fatally shot in Holmes County, Mississippi, on September 6, 2025. The killing occurred in Lexington and the Lexington Police Department opened a homicide investigation. Local reporting noted authorities announced an arrest in connection with the homicide soon after the shooting, though initial accounts did not publish the suspect’s identity.

Powers had earlier been arrested as a juvenile in January 2024 and charged along with two others, Darnell Deering and Kengelle Powell, in the December 20, 2023, fatal shooting of Deshun Coleman on Highway 17 South at Brozville Road and Old Balance Due Road. His return to the community and subsequent death renewed concerns about ongoing violence in the area. Investigators were working to establish a motive and whether this homicide was linked to earlier incidents.
