A dispute that began at a Waffle House in Gonzales, Louisiana, on the night of a graduation celebration ended in a fatal drive-by shooting on Interstate 10 near Prairieville around 2 a.m. A westbound vehicle carrying 20-year-old Dantrell Gibbs of Donaldsonville and two others was pursued by a white GMC Sierra whose occupants opened fire. The victims’ car returned fire, then exited the interstate to seek help. Responders found three people with gunshot wounds; Dantrell Gibbs died at the scene and an 18-year-old, Jermaine Trey James, later died of his injuries. A third occupant suffered non-life-threatening wounds.

Ascension Parish investigators recovered shell casings on the interstate and three firearms discarded at a nearby hotel. Arrests were made in Gonzales: Jakiryn Johnson, 19; Kavis Octave Jr., 17; and Taron Parker, 18. All three face charges that include first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, illegal use of weapons, assault by drive-by shooting, and aggravated damage to property. The sheriff’s office says the shooting was not random.
