On the evening of July 6, 2025, officers in Moberly, Missouri, responded to a shooting in the 900 block of East Logan Street and found 23-year-old Bailey E. Scott suffering from a gunshot wound to her torso on the front porch of a neighbor’s home. Emergency personnel pronounced Scott dead at the scene. She was a mother to a three-year-old son and worked at a local assisted living facility.
Authorities arrested 68-year-old David Kip Heyde, who lived directly across the street, and charged him with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Investigators say the dispute began over Heyde’s behavior toward local wildlife; neighbors alleged he was luring and killing birds, and Scott reportedly confronted him. Heyde told police he acted in self-defense, claiming Scott struck him, but probable cause documents note no visible facial injuries on Heyde and the autopsy found no injuries to Scott’s hands.
The community held vigils and fundraisers for Scott’s son as the case moved into the courts. Did anyone in Moberly witness interactions between Scott and Heyde or have information about tensions over the neighborhood wildlife?
