Christopher J. Smith, 35, of Canton, was shot in the early hours of October 4, 2025, and later died at Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital. Officers were called to an apartment in the 2100 block of Market Avenue North around 1:30 a.m. and found him on the living room floor with a gunshot wound to the hip.

By the following Monday Canton police said they were seeking a 32-year-old suspect identified as Corey L. Parte, who had left the scene before officers arrived. Detectives continued canvassing for leads and asked anyone with information to contact the department. No arrest had been announced as of the latest update.
