Daryl Dudley, 52, was found just before midnight on August 28, 2025, inside an apartment on the 500 block of East Bright Street in Kinston, North Carolina. Officers responding to reports of a shooting discovered him unresponsive with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound; EMS was dispatched but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Neighbors and family described him as a devoted father and son as grief spread through the neighborhood.

Within 24 hours investigators executed a search warrant at a nearby address and recovered three firearms—two handguns, one altered with a conversion device, and an AR-style pistol—and two men in the room were arrested on gun charges. Investigators later obtained murder warrants for 22-year-old Prince Ellison; law enforcement located and arrested him without incident on the night of September 16 in Walstonburg. Warrants were also obtained for 23-year-old Daquan Willis for felony aid and abet in connection with Dudley’s murder, and police said the case remains active.
