On the afternoon of August 27, 2025, 19-year-old Dasean L. Banks, Black male, was found dead outside the New Dixie Mart (locally known as Presto) on Julian R. Allsbrook Highway in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. Police were called to the store around 1 p.m.; inside they found another man, Anthony Shearin, suffering gunshot wounds. Shearin was taken to ECU North Hospital and then to Greenville, where he later died.

Investigators say the confrontation began the night before between Banks and Shearin. Detectives allege that Banks returned to the store the next day with 26-year-old Ju-Quan Letrae Rawles. Authorities say Rawles shot Shearin and, in the same burst of gunfire, also shot and killed Banks. Police allege Rawles then left the scene, changed clothes and concealed the weapon; he was initially charged with obstruction of justice and, two days later, was charged with murder in both deaths and ordered held without bond. Memorial and funeral notices confirm Banks died August 27, 2025.
