Jayden Bonner, 17, a Shaker Heights high school senior, was killed on August 30, 2025, after gunfire broke out in a Maple Heights neighborhood late that Saturday night. Police were called about 10 p.m. to the 5200 block of Thomas Street, where two boys with gunshot wounds were found and taken to hospital. Officers searching the area then located a third victim—Bonner—on nearby Cato Street; he died at the scene in the backyard of a home a short walk from where the first shots were reported.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner identified Bonner as a teenager classmates remembered for an easy laugh and steady, positive energy. District leaders described the loss as a profound tragedy and arranged counselors as students returned to school. Community leaders in Maple Heights convened a roundtable to address rising concerns about youth violence and to give neighbors a place to grieve and discuss prevention.

Detectives have released few details about what sparked the shooting. As of early September, the investigation was active, authorities were appealing for tips, and no arrests had been announced. If anyone has information about movements that night or saw anything on Thomas Street or Cato Street, please share what you know with the Maple Heights Detective Bureau.
