Timothy Kappenhagen, 28, was shot and later died after an armed confrontation in the parking lot of the Giant Eagle at 5321 Warrensville Center Road in Maple Heights on Saturday, August 9, 2025. According to police and the medical examiner, the attack happened shortly after 1:40 p.m. as Kappenhagen was loading groceries into his Hyundai Elantra; a masked man approached, a struggle ensued, and the assailant shot him in the chest. He was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center for surgery and was pronounced dead just before 7 a.m. the next morning, Sunday.

The shooter fled in Kappenhagen’s car, and that theft became a central lead early in the investigation. Police entered the vehicle into the statewide LEADS system and recovered it soon afterward; investigators later located a separate vehicle of interest and briefly detained two men found inside, though they were not charged at that time. Family described Kappenhagen as running a simple errand for his family and called the killing a random act of violence. The Maple Heights Police Department asked anyone with information to contact detectives.

Did anyone witness the confrontation in the Giant Eagle parking lot or recognize the vehicles involved?
