Jaime H. De La Fuente, 58, was shot multiple times inside a vehicle at Sunset Park on North Taylor Street in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, on July 24, 2025 and later died at UNC Nash Hospital. Born in Matamoros, Mexico, he is remembered by family and friends as warm, quick to help, and closely tied to his children and community; obituaries and memorial notices emphasized his role at family gatherings and the shock of his killing.
Police say the shooting produced sudden violence in a public place and that the suspect, identified as 47-year-old Calvin Conyers, fled on foot toward the parking lot of Chico’s Mexican Restaurant on Sunset Avenue. There, investigators allege he brandished a gun and attempted to carjack a vehicle occupied by a woman and a child, and during that incident the suspect shot himself and was taken to a hospital in critical condition. A fourth person suffered minor injuries and was treated and released.
By the next day authorities had charged the hospitalized suspect with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree kidnapping, among other counts, and sought tips as they reconstructed the timeline from the park to the restaurant. Does anyone who was in Sunset Park or the Sunset Avenue area that afternoon have information that could help clarify what happened?
