Alva Boyd Fortenberry, 63, was found dead in a woman’s yard in the Crow’s Nest area of Lane, Oklahoma, on the morning of May 4, 2025. A caller reported a man in the yard about 11 a.m.; deputies and EMS arrived to find Fortenberry with an apparent fatal gunshot wound and he was pronounced dead. The Atoka County Sheriff’s Office and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, along with the state medical examiner, handled the initial investigation.

Fortenberry was a lifelong Atoka area resident, born February 13, 1962, who attended Tushka Public Schools and graduated from Atoka High School. He worked as a butcher and in the family house-moving business, served in the Oklahoma Army National Guard, and was a father and grandfather.

Authorities detained one person early in the inquiry but did not release a name or any charges. Weeks later the investigation was transferred to the FBI, with local deputies assisting. No official arrests or publicly identified suspects have been announced.

If anyone knew Alva Boyd Fortenberry or has information about his death, please come forward to investigators.
