Sixteen-year-old Damari Harrell of Windsor was shot and killed on the evening of July 15, 2025, at the outdoor basketball courts on the grounds of Windsor Elementary School, 104 Cooper Hill Road. Authorities say an argument among a group gathered at the courts escalated and someone opened fire; responders found Damari mortally wounded and he died at the scene. Investigators from the Windsor Police Department, with assistance from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, secured the area around 7:00–7:15 p.m. and interviewed numerous witnesses who had been on or near the court.

Officials emphasized the campus was out of session and no school activity was underway; the courts are described as a common gathering spot for local youth. Damari, a rising junior in Bertie County Schools, was publicly identified within days and his family called for answers and justice. As of mid-July 2025 no arrests had been announced and no suspect had been publicly named.

If anyone was at the courts that evening or has information that could help the investigation, please come forward to local authorities.
