Jaime Lynn Borchert, 48, was found dead in her Sioux Falls home in the early hours of May 12, 2025. Police were called to a residence in the 1100 block of North Minnesota Avenue shortly after 2 a.m. for a report of an unresponsive woman; inside the home officers discovered Borchert with a fatal gunshot wound to the head and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities arrested her 22-year-old son, Nathaniel Borchert, who was present when officers arrived. A pistol recovered from the residence is believed to be the weapon used. Reports say police had been called to the family home on previous occasions and that there had been a history of family disputes. Nathaniel Borchert was initially booked on second-degree murder; in early June 2025 the charges were upgraded to include premeditated first-degree murder and manslaughter, and investigators also uncovered multiple counts of possession of child pornography during the homicide probe. A judge set bond at $500,000 cash only.

Jaime Lynn Borchert was remembered for her work and community focus — she earned a bachelor’s degree from South Dakota State University in 2007 and a master’s from Sioux Falls Seminary in 2014, had a passion for social work and counseling, and was known for her love of animals. Did anyone in Sioux Falls know Jaime Lynn or have information about the family’s history that could help clarify what happened?
