After the shooting he staggered into the Hot Spot convenience store on Highway 76 seeking help; first responders transported him for medical care but he did not survive. Sowells, born December 7, 1987, in Florence County, was a 2007 graduate of Timmonsville High School, co-owner of JPW Motors, and a father of two who was expecting a third child. He is remembered for his big heart and radiant smile.
Investigators identified two men as persons of interest and later arrested and charged Ja’Tayvion De’Shon Maurice Dickey with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. A second man, 42-year-old Marcino Jarvaris Brown, turned himself in and faces charges including murder, robbery and criminal conspiracy. Both were held at the Florence County Detention Center as the case proceeded toward the courts.
