Khalil Grant, 18, a Black male from New Bern, was shot late on the night of Friday, May 23, 2025. Police first responded to a ShotSpotter alert near Queen Anne Lane around 11:15 p.m., and minutes later a 911 call reported a shooting near McKinley Avenue and Charles Street. Officers and EMS found Grant at that location with a gunshot wound; he was taken to CarolinaEast Medical Center and did not survive. Funeral records list his passing as May 24, 2025.
Police described the McKinley Avenue shooting as appearing targeted and later characterized the homicide as gang-related, saying Grant had been the focus of prior gang activity in New Bern’s Pembroke area. Investigators collected shell casings at the Queen Anne Lane scene and asked witnesses to come forward while exploring whether the two locations were connected. In subsequent weeks officers executed a warrant on Watson Avenue in a May 2025 murder probe; media reporting noted the operation might relate to Grant’s case but did not confirm a connection. No suspect was identified or arrest announced in Grant’s killing in the most detailed public updates.
If anyone knew Khalil, was in the Pembroke area that night, or saw activity near Queen Anne Lane or McKinley Avenue and Charles Street, investigators want to hear from you.
