John Martin Bidle, 46, was killed on the afternoon of May 31, 2025, at his home in Columbia, Tennessee. A neighbor identified as Byron Childers confronted Bidle around 3 p.m., then opened fire with a rifle, striking Bidle multiple times. Bidle died at the scene. Family details note he was a licensed pilot, classic car enthusiast who restored Chevy Camaros, an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, and was devoted to his wife Amy and daughter Melanie.
The attack continued: 51-year-old neighbor Stacie Wright, who came outside during the shooting, was also killed. An ice cream truck driver was wounded and survived. Childers was taken into custody by the Columbia Police Department and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. At a preliminary hearing Amy Bidle described Childers as a family friend; she testified that after shooting her husband he told her it was going to be okay and that we’re going to own all of this. Childers gave a jailhouse interview expressing remorse and denying that the act reflected who he is; a mental health evaluation was ordered and he remains jailed without bond.
Does anyone in Columbia remember seeing or hearing anything unusual in that neighborhood on the afternoon of May 31?
