On the evening of August 4, 2025, 33-year-old Justin Rodriguez was shot in the clavicle/right shoulder after a confrontation at his girlfriend’s apartment at St. Mary’s Apartments on the 200 block of North Mier Street in San Diego, Texas. Responders found him collapsed inside and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators recovered a .40-caliber pistol at another residence during the initial evidence sweep.

Officials said the incident began when friends of the girlfriend arrived and a dispute escalated to a shot fired through a window. Officers were dispatched just before 7 p.m.; by the next morning the victim was publicly identified as Justin Rodriguez of Freer. The scene remained cordoned while Texas Rangers joined local officers to canvass for witnesses and collect evidence.

An arrest followed quickly. On August 5 authorities located and arrested 17-year-old Zan Gonzalez in Jackson County; he was charged with the murder of Justin Rodriguez and was expected to be transferred to the Duval County Jail. Obituary and memorial notices confirmed Rodriguez died of gun violence on August 4, 2025, and family and friends gathered to mourn.
