Just after midnight on June 3, 2025, officers responded to the 3300 block of Nashville Avenue in Greenville for reports of gunfire. At about 12:42 a.m. they found 19-year-old Zavien Smallwood suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was given first aid at the scene and taken to Hunt Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

Police said the killing appeared to stem from a domestic disturbance and that a male suspect had been identified. Investigators canvassed the area for witnesses and evidence, and authorities asked anyone with information to contact Detective Henry Potts. No public announcement of an arrest had been made at that time.
