Van Wilson, 57, of Bloomington, Illinois, was shot in the parking lot of the Casey’s on Fox Creek Road on the city’s south side on the afternoon of October 21, 2025. Officers were called about 4:20 p.m. with bystanders already trying to help. He was taken to a local hospital and later transferred to Carle Hospital in Urbana, where the Champaign County coroner pronounced him dead at 8:58 p.m. An autopsy was scheduled as investigators worked to piece together what happened.

Police identified and stopped a suspect vehicle with help from a community member and took 25-year-old Deshaun Bussell of Bloomington into custody about twelve minutes after the shooting. By the following day authorities said Bussell was being held in McLean County on preliminary charges including murder and aggravated battery for the discharge of a firearm. Officials reported no ongoing threat to public safety and asked anyone with information to come forward as the investigation proceeds.
