Anthony Wayne ’Tony’ Cupec, 45, was shot and killed in Lynchburg, Virginia, on the evening of October 8, 2025. Police were called about 8:59 p.m. to shots fired near Pierce Street and 12th Street and found Cupec with gunshot wounds; he was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital and pronounced dead.
Investigators say Cupec was involved in a street altercation with another man that escalated; that man produced a handgun and fired. Security footage reportedly captured the two men interacting shortly before the shooting, and the suspect fled in a dark-colored sedan. The vehicle believed to have been used was later recovered.
Early the next morning, 43-year-old Larry Kersey surrendered to police and was charged with murder, use or display of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Court records list Kersey as unemployed and show a hearing was scheduled for the following February.
Does anyone in Lynchburg remember seeing activity near Pierce and 12th Street that night or have information about the events leading up to the shooting?
