Deputy Andrew Nunez, 28, was killed while responding to a domestic violence call in Rancho Cucamonga on October 27, 2025. Deputies were sent shortly after 12:30 p.m. to a home on Hollyhock Drive for a report of a man with a gun threatening a woman. As deputies arrived, the suspect opened fire and Nunez was struck in the head. He was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, where lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful.
The shooter fled on a motorcycle, prompting a high-speed pursuit on the 210 Freeway. An off-duty narcotics officer in an unmarked vehicle performed a legal intervention maneuver that caused the motorcycle to crash; the rider was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital in stable condition. Authorities identified the suspect as 47-year-old Angelo Jose Saldivar of San Bernardino and said they expected to seek murder charges once he was medically cleared. Flags were lowered across the state and a candlelight vigil was held at Rancho Cucamonga City Hall.
If anyone witnessed the shooting or the subsequent freeway pursuit, or has information that could help investigators, please come forward.
