Daniel Johnson, a 27-year-old Black man from Blountstown, Florida, was shot and died after being brought to Calhoun Liberty Hospital shortly after 6 p.m. on November 9, 2025. Investigators determined the shooting happened at Cooper’s Park off Mayhaw Drive, where officers found evidence of gunfire and multiple shell casings. Witnesses who rushed Johnson to the hospital directed police back to the park.

Local accounts describe the killing as the culmination of an ongoing dispute between two men. Law enforcement, including the Blountstown Police, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, identified 21-year-old Kellen Alexander Speights as the man they believed had fired the shot. Officers tracked his vehicle toward Tallahassee; when Leon County deputies tried to stop him he abandoned the car and fled on foot before being captured and taken into custody. Court and booking records list Speights as a Tallahassee resident booked on a homicide charge and a felony probation violation, with additional charges for fleeing and eluding.

Daniel Johnson’s name has been added to national gun violence databases and a memorial page shows dozens of virtual candles and memories left by visitors. Does anyone who knew Daniel or was in Cooper’s Park that evening have information that could help?
