On the evening of November 8, 2025, 34-year-old Lake Elsinore resident Garrett Pickering was shot and killed while walking along East Lakeshore Drive near Elm Street. Deputies were dispatched about 8:40 p.m. after 911 callers reported a man down; paramedics and deputies pronounced Pickering dead at the scene. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit took the lead, collecting shell casings, canvassing neighbors and searching for surveillance and witnesses.

Detectives later said Pickering was involved in a dispute with another man shortly before the shooting, and that the other man allegedly drew a handgun and fired. By the next day investigators had identified 47-year-old Lake Elsinore resident Ian Norwood Wentz, who surrendered at the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station and was booked on suspicion of murder. Authorities had not disclosed a motive or whether the two men knew each other.

Anyone who was in the 2000 block of East Lakeshore Drive on the night of November 8 or who has information about this confrontation is asked to come forward.
