On November 7, 2025, at about 2:50 p.m. in Lexington, Kentucky, 36-year-old Derrico Wallace Jr., a visitor from Detroit, was shot in an apartment complex parking lot on Centre Parkway near the Tates Creek schools campus. He was taken to a local hospital but died of his injuries. The daytime shooting prompted a heightened alert at nearby schools and reportedly struck a parked car occupied by a woman and a five-year-old child.
Lexington police say they identified a suspect vehicle through their Real-Time Intelligence Center and made an arrest within an hour. The suspect, 36-year-old Erick Morgan, was described as an acquaintance of Wallace. Police allege Morgan believed Wallace was involved with his girlfriend, that Wallace was unarmed, and that Morgan produced a black Glock, fired an initial shot, then pursued Wallace as he fled, firing additional rounds. Officers say Morgan confessed after waiving his rights, led police to the gun hidden in a bush, and was linked by eyewitnesses and residential surveillance footage.
Morgan was booked at the Fayette County Detention Center and charged with murder, tampering with physical evidence, felon in possession of a firearm, and two counts of wanton endangerment; bond was set at $1 million. He pleaded not guilty at his first court appearance, and a judge found probable cause to send the case to a grand jury. If anyone witnessed the shooting or has footage from Centre Parkway that afternoon, please share what was seen or recorded.
