David Long, a 76-year-old locksmith from Vero Beach, Florida, was critically wounded on November 21 while assisting deputies with a court-ordered eviction in the Bermuda Club/Somerset Bay area. He had been hired to open the door and change the locks after deputies carried out the eviction. Deputies and Long say the team expected a routine civil process when 37-year-old Michael Halberstam, whose mother owned the home, armed himself and opened fire inside the residence.
Sgt. Terri Sweeting-Mashkow was fatally shot at the scene; Deputy Florentino Arizpe was wounded in the shoulder and later released from the hospital. Long was transported in extremely critical condition to HCA Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce and died there on November 23. Halberstam was also shot, taken to a hospital under guard, and died on November 22. Authorities have described the episode as a triple-fatal shooting stemming from the attempted eviction and have identified Halberstam as the shooter.
Long was remembered locally as a longtime small-business owner who had provided locksmith services in Indian River County for decades. If anyone knew David Long, his work, or was at the scene that morning, please share what might help clarify what happened.
