On the night of December 9, 2025, 21-year-old Ricky Lynn Dunaway III was killed during a shootout on Highway 84 in Jones County, Mississippi. Two vehicles traveling on the highway exchanged gunfire; first responders found Dunaway with fatal injuries and he was pronounced dead. A second person was wounded in the same incident.

Jones County Sheriff’s deputies expanded the investigation into neighboring Wayne County as they traced the vehicles and people believed to have been involved. Within hours, three suspects were identified and arrested in Wayne County and charged in connection with the fatal exchange of shots and the injury to the other victim. The motive for the confrontation has not been detailed.
