On the evening of Sunday, November 30, 2025, gunfire was reported on the 700 block of Lance Drive in Newport News, Virginia. Officers responding around 8:30 p.m. found 15-year-old Jacari Marzel Oakes with critical gunshot wounds; he was taken to a local hospital. Jacari fought for his life for two days and died on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.

Jacari, born in May 2010, was remembered by neighbors and friends as a friendly, kind student who often waved on his way to school. The shooting left a quiet neighborhood shaken and prompted candlelight vigils and online tributes from the community.

Detectives pursued technological leads and tips from the public and located 24-year-old Jamar Miguel Davis of Newport News; law enforcement arrested him in Hampton. Davis was charged with second-degree murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He also faces five counts of possession of child pornography from a separate investigation.
