On the night of January 9, 2026, shots were reported in a Big Spring, Texas neighborhood. Officers responded about 10:32 p.m. to a home in the 2600 block of Langley Drive. Inside the residence they found 36-year-old Phillip Samuel Lozano Jr. with fatal gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two people were outside when police arrived: 43-year-old Joel Adrian Florez and a 40-year-old woman. Florez initially told investigators that Lozano had forcibly entered the home and was armed, and that he shot in self-defense. Detectives from the Big Spring Police Department, assisted by the Texas Rangers, later developed evidence they say established probable cause to charge Florez with murder. An arrest warrant was issued and Florez was taken into custody on January 10 and booked into the Howard County Detention Center with bond set at $1 million.
Authorities have not released additional details about what led them to pursue a murder charge or about any relationship between Lozano and the people who were at the residence. Does anyone have information about Phillip Lozano Jr., his movements that evening, or contacts in the Langley Drive area?
