A fatal shooting on the evening of New Year’s Day 2026 ended with 41-year-old David Adam Garza dead in Hargill, Texas. At about 8:17 p.m., officers responding to a vehicle crash near 5th and Gill streets found Garza inside his white Toyota Tundra, injured from the crash and suffering from a gunshot wound with no pulse. Investigators say the sequence began with an altercation on the 600 block of Couch Street. Garza was shot as he drove away, kept driving north on Gill Street, struck another vehicle in a minor collision, then crashed into a tree.
Witnesses pulled Garza from the truck and tried to render aid before emergency personnel arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities arrested 23-year-old Jose Ascencion Lopez Jr. and charged him with murder; a handgun recovered during the investigation matched the brand and caliber of ammunition found at the scene. Lopez was arraigned with bond set at $1.5 million. The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office asks anyone with information to come forward.
Did anyone see the altercation on Couch Street or the shooting as Garza drove away?
