A New Year’s gathering in a Lexington parking lot turned deadly on January 1, 2026. Around 6:30 p.m. a burst of gunfire on the 1000 block of South Broadway left three men shot. Twenty-year-old Julio Vazquez was transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital with life-threatening wounds but died there at 8:42 p.m. Another 20-year-old, Mauricio Jenkins, was pronounced dead at the scene; a third man was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The Fayette County Coroner’s Office confirmed the identities of Vazquez and Jenkins. Lexington Police detectives canvassed the area, sought surveillance footage from nearby businesses, and asked residents to come forward. No suspects have been publicly identified and no arrests announced; authorities have not released a motive. The investigation remains active.
