Rene Antonio Maldonado Garay, 28, was killed by a gunshot on the evening of February 2, 2026, in the yard of a home at 301 Mobile Home Park on South Brightleaf Boulevard in Smithfield, North Carolina. Smithfield officers who responded to a call about 10 p.m. found Maldonado Garay deceased at the scene.

A 23-year-old man, Albert Abdelnor, remained at the location and cooperated with detectives. Authorities say the shooting grew out of an ongoing family dispute between the two men. A shotgun believed to be the weapon was recovered at the scene. Abdelnor was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder; he is being held without bond at the Johnston County Detention Center while the investigation continues.
