On the afternoon of Sunday, February 1, 2026, David Michael Dyke, 45, was fatally shot in the parking lot of a Casey’s General Store in Fremont, Iowa. Officers responded about 5:20 p.m.; Dyke was found deceased from an apparent gunshot wound and his body was taken to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s office in Ankeny for autopsy.

Court documents say an altercation began inside the store between Dyke and another Fremont man, Michael Joseph Lee, 45, and continued in the parking lot. The documents allege Lee fired multiple shots during a physical confrontation, one striking Dyke and another hitting the store. Lee was arrested at his Fremont residence about 2:45 a.m. the next morning and charged with Murder in the 1st Degree; he told investigators Dyke was on top of him when he fired a revolver from his coat pocket, but authorities say physical evidence and witness statements contradict that account. Lee was booked on a $500,000 cash-only bond and a preliminary hearing was set for February 11.

Authorities say they consider the incident isolated and that there is no ongoing danger to the public. Does anyone have information about the encounter inside the store or witnesses who saw the parking lot confrontation?
