On the afternoon of Thursday, February 19, 2026, a Toyota Camry in the Cambridge Subdivision of La Place, Louisiana, was the scene of a deadly confrontation that left two young men dead. Seventeen-year-old Gerard Garrett was found unresponsive in the passenger seat and 18-year-old Daniel Robles De Medina was found unresponsive in the driver’s seat; both were pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds. First responders arrived around 2:30 p.m.

Deputies recovered two handguns, narcotics and cash inside the vehicle. Investigators say the men were engaged in what appears to have been an illegal narcotics transaction that turned violent; a struggle inside the moving car reportedly led both occupants to draw firearms and shoot one another. The car subsequently left the roadway and crashed into a brick home, which sustained significant structural damage; a resident inside the house was uninjured.

The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office examined cell phone conversations between the two and treats the deaths as the result of the dispute between the vehicle’s occupants, with no other suspects being sought. Anyone with information about the incident or the two young men is asked to come forward.
