Shelley Kay Robertson was 24 and described as a free spirit who had recently returned to Colorado after a year working in Alaska. She was last seen on July 1, 1975, when she failed to show up for work at her father’s printing press in Golden. One of the final reported sights was a police officer’s observation of her at a service station with a man who had bushy hair and a beard and was driving an old, beat-up red pickup truck.

On August 23, 1975, two Colorado School of Mines students exploring the abandoned Willie Mae Mine near Berthoud Pass discovered a strong odor of decomposition and found the naked, badly decomposed body of a young woman. The remains were bound with duct tape and had suffered head trauma; identification established the victim as Shelley Robertson. Only a single earring was recovered with the body.

Investigators focused on Ted Bundy because he was in the Golden area at the time, credit card receipts placed him there, he had altered his appearance by growing a beard and had owned an old pickup truck. He was never formally charged in this case; years later he reportedly made a vague remark about her to an investigator.

Did anyone who knew Shelley or who remembers a red pickup truck in the Golden area that summer come forward with information?
