Sixteen-year-old JaKory McMillian was shot and killed in an alley near West Locust and Foye Streets in Dubuque, Iowa, on the night of March 9, 2026. Officers arrived after reports of a shooting; McMillian was found with a gunshot wound, taken to UnityPoint Finley Hospital and later pronounced dead. The incident reportedly grew out of a dispute that escalated into violence.
Police say the people involved knew each other and that an earlier disturbance preceded the shooting. Investigators identified 18-year-old Latrell Powell-Moore of Dubuque as a suspect. Authorities allege Powell-Moore brandished a handgun, chased McMillian, struck him with the weapon, and then shot him at close range after McMillian fell. The confrontation is said to have begun over comments about McMillian’s deceased mother.
A warrant for first-degree murder was issued, and on March 12, 2026, Powell-Moore was located in Marion with help from the U.S. Marshals Service and other departments and taken into custody. He was held at the Dubuque County Jail on $2 million bond. Does anyone have information about what happened that night or knew JaKory?
