On the morning of March 3, 2026, a Huntington Beach neighborhood on Brookhurst Street was the scene of a fatal shooting. Police responded around 10 a.m. after multiple reports of a domestic dispute and the sound of gunshots. Officers forced entry to the home and found 65-year-old Bari Payne with a fatal gunshot wound; Payne was pronounced dead at the scene.

Also inside the residence was 76-year-old Robert Cipiano Alvarez Jr., who was detained and later arrested on suspicion of murder after interviews and evidence were collected. Two days later the Orange County District Attorney’s Office filed murder charges against Alvarez, including a sentencing enhancement for the personal discharge of a firearm causing death. Investigators described the killing as appearing to be an isolated incident.
