On the evening of Monday, February 23, 2026, 38-year-old Edward Joseph Garofalo IV was fatally shot in Oakley, California. The shooting occurred around 9 p.m. in the vicinity of the 3200 block of Dutch Slough Road, near Bethel Island. Garofalo, a Martinez resident, was pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds.
The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office investigated in the days after the shooting and arrested 40-year-old Clayton Dortzbach of Pittsburg on Wednesday of that week; he was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on a murder charge with bail set at one million dollars. The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s office did not formally charge Dortzbach, and he was released from custody. No motive has been disclosed and no other suspects or further investigative details have been made public.
If anyone has information about Garofalo’s movements that evening or saw activity near Dutch Slough Road on February 23, please come forward to investigators.
