Audrey Card, 38, was killed in the early morning hours of April 19, 2026, on a dirt road off Charlie Hurt Highway in Covelo, California. She was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at 6:55 a.m.; an autopsy ruled the cause of death a homicide from those gunshot wounds.
Officials say the events began earlier that morning when a 16-year-old male suspect followed and shot at a 15-year-old female relative’s vehicle, forced her to stop at gunpoint, and physically assaulted her. The girl escaped and called family; during a later phone call the teenager heard gunshots, and Card was fatally shot while on that call. A citizen first tried to take Card to the Covelo Volunteer Fire Department, then to a nearby residence for help. Deputies and Round Valley Tribal Police performed CPR until paramedics arrived, but Card did not survive.
A 16-year-old boy from Covelo was arrested two days later in Oroville after a short foot chase and returned to Mendocino County. He was booked into juvenile hall and faces multiple charges including first-degree murder, use of a firearm during a felony, stalking, criminal threats, and domestic battery in connection with the assault on the 15-year-old. Does anyone in Covelo have information about the movements that morning or about the teens involved?
