On the evening of February 5, 1997, 47-year-old Richard Aderson was shot and killed after a minor traffic accident on Interstate 84 in Fishkill, New York. Both drivers pulled onto the shoulder and an argument followed. According to Aderson, the other driver produced a gun and shot him in the chest; Aderson was able to return to his car and call 911, giving a description of his assailant and the vehicle before he died in the ambulance en route to St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh.
Aderson described the shooter as a thin white male in his late 40s, about six feet tall, with a receding hairline and wearing aviator-style eyeglasses. He said the man was driving a green, late-model Jeep Cherokee–type vehicle, possibly with New Hampshire plates. Aderson was the assistant superintendent for the Valley Central School District and a father of three.
The homicide drew national attention and was featured on television programs, but despite thousands of leads over the years no arrests have been made and the suspect remains unidentified. Anyone who remembers that evening, the described vehicle, or the man should contact the New York State Police with information.
