Nancy Metayer Bowen, 38, a Coral Springs city commissioner and vice mayor, was found dead at her home on Northwest 127th Avenue on April 1, 2026. A first-generation Haitian American and environmental scientist with degrees from Florida A&M and Johns Hopkins, she was elected to the commission in 2020 as the city’s first Black and Haitian American woman to hold that office.

City employees became concerned when she did not show up for scheduled meetings and could not be reached; a call to her husband, Stephen Bowen, reportedly raised further concern and prompted a welfare check. Officers discovered Nancy deceased inside the residence and characterized the preliminary investigation as involving domestic violence. Stephen Bowen, 40, fled but was located after license plate readers tracked his vehicle to Plantation and arrested by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. He was charged with premeditated murder and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.

The community held vigils and tributes, many wearing orange, to honor her advocacy for environmental justice and public service. If anyone knew Nancy, her work, or saw relevant activity at the Bowen residence on April 1, please share what you know.
