Charles Van Di Veir Anderson II, 79, was shot and killed at his Port Charlotte home after a dispute investigators say began among people connected to the residence. A Navy veteran who later owned a gas station and worked as a mechanic, Anderson was with two other people when someone knocked at the front door and he was shot in the head; 911 calls released afterward identified the alleged shooter as Matthew Ryan Cross, 32.
Authorities say Cross was known to Anderson through someone staying at the home and that Cross had allegedly broken in on March 27, stealing items including a gun. Deputies responding around midday found Anderson mortally wounded; the shooting prompted a manhunt after witnesses reported seeing Cross with a firearm in nearby woods. Officers later encountered Cross, who reportedly pointed a gun at his own head and did not comply with orders. Multiple deputies and officers fired, killing Cross at the scene; deputies said the weapon appeared to be the gun taken from Anderson’s home and was empty when Cross emerged.
Investigators believe Cross acted alone in the burglary linked to Anderson’s home. The officer-involved shooting was to be reviewed by the State Attorney’s Office. Does anyone have information about Anderson, the people connected to his residence, or the events leading up to March 27?
