Devon Nelson, a 17-year-old from Midland, Texas, was killed on March 28, 2026, after gunfire erupted at Reyes-Mashburn-Nelms Park on East Cuthbert Avenue. Police arriving on reports of shots fired found chaos in the parking lot, multiple vehicles leaving, blood, and spent shell casings from both a pistol and a rifle. Nelson was taken to Midland Memorial Hospital, where he died of his injuries.
Investigators say witness accounts, surveillance video, court documents and physical evidence point to a confrontation involving several armed young men near a vehicle. Witnesses described a Draco-style weapon and a pistol with an extended magazine. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Juan Reyes Jr. and Alejandro Lopez Jr. taking shooting stances and firing toward Nelson before leaving together. Three suspects have been identified: 19-year-old Juan Reyes Jr., 18-year-old Alejandro Lopez, and a 15-year-old juvenile whose name was not released.
Devon’s family described him as energetic, loyal and a true athlete, and they were left planning a funeral while coping with the sudden loss. Does anyone who was at the park that evening or who knows Devon have information that could help the investigation?
